Born In Us Today PDF Print E-mail

In the church we have just come through four weeks of Advent. This is is a time for pause, preparation, repentance and reflection. Sounds wonderful. Perhaps your life is similar to mine - taking a moment (or momentS) to pause and breath is critical.

And yet, preparation that?s intended for us to ready our hearts for the birth of the Messiah often gets replaced by cooking, shopping and wrapping gifts. We hear again the words of John the Baptist to repent and prepare the way of the Lord. My repentance is too often more like feelings of guilt for the way my
money was spent. And, reflection - good grief - who has the time?! The time is set aside and yet I (we?) power through.

Suddenly - almost unexpectedly - it is Christmas. There comes that miraculous moment when God enters the picture. No matter how dazed and exhausted we are on Christmas Eve - the focus returns. Somewhere between the first verse of “Good Christian Friends Rejoice” and the lighting of the candles it happens.

For me - it is during the singing of a childhood favorite. One of the first Christmas carols I learned was “O Little Town Of Bethlehem”. I could sing the first and sometimes the second verse by memory - but it is the fifth verse - learned as an adult - that speaks to me:

Oh holy Child of Bethlehem!
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
Oh come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel.

Born in us today! That?s the great good news of Christmas - that through all our ?stuff? Christ comes to retake His rightful place in our hearts and lives.

May it be so with you - not just on Christmas - but each and every day.

Merry Christmas friends and Happy New Year.

Paula

Hi Paula,

It's always great to hear from you. Thanks for your message.

I will come to visit your new church, soon. I think my father was a member of
that church. Maybe seeing it will jog my memory.

Hope to see you two at
Bunco.

Hugs,
Bonnie
